ADVERTISING AGENCIES
Many large companies employ the services of an external advertising agency. In 2003 there were over 13,500 such U.S. and international agencies listed in the Standard Directory of Advertising Agencies, (The “Red Book” can be accessed at www.redbooks.com) ranging in size from one and two person operations to those with almost a billion dollars in worldwide income.
A. The Ad Agency’s Role—external agencies provide a variety of services to their clients, including those discussed in the previous section. Though many clients have the capabilities of performing these roles themselves, they elect to use outside agencies for the following reasons:
(1) the skills offered
(2) objectivity and
(3) experience.
B. Types of Advertising Agencies—all agencies are not the same of course. This section discusses the various types of agencies including the following:
1. Full Service—these agencies offer their clients a full range of services including account services, marketing planning and research, media planning and buying, sales promotion, creative services, and interactive media. The various departments of a full service agency include:
• Account services—the link between the advertising agency and its clients. Account executives serve as the liaison between the agency and client and are responsible for coordinating the agency’s efforts in planning, creating and producing ads.
• Marketing services—many full-service agencies provide a variety of marketing services to their clients and maintain departments such as research, strategy and planning and media. In a full-service agency the media department is very important since many clients are consolidating their media buying to save money and improve media efficiency.
• Creative services—agency personnel in this department include artists and copywriters who are responsible for the creation and execution of the clients advertising messages. Creative services may also include print and broadcast production departments which are responsible for actually producing the advertising messages and putting them into final form. The traffic department coordinates all phases of production and sees that all ads are completed on time and deadlines for submitting the ads to the media are met.
? Management and finance—like any other business, an advertising agency must be managed and must perform basic operating and administrative functions such as accounting, finance and human resources
Attention should also be given to the two basic types or agency organization structures used by agencies. Under the departmental system each of the agency functions is set up as a separate department and is called upon to perform its specialty for all of the agency’s clients. Many agencies use the group system in which individuals from each department work together as teams to service a particular account. Many clients prefer the group system because agency employees become very familiar with their business and it ensures continuity in servicing the account.
Other Types of Agencies and Services
1. Creative boutiques—these types of agencies specialize in and provide only advertising creative services.
2. Media buying services—these are independent companies that specialize in media planning and buying. Many companies use independent media buying to plan and purchase media and an advertising agency to handle their creative work.

Advertising agencies in Singapore?
I am looking for a directory listing of advertising agencies in Singapore. Is there any available online with their contact information? Specifically, I am looking to work in Singapore and want this information to send my resume.
admin answers:
Companies will usually advertise for vacancies in the newspapers/online jobs websites or by words of mouth. Rather than sending your resumes all over the island, you can ask your friends in Singapore to keep a lookout for you or check out these general online job sites:
http://www.jobsdb.com/SG/
http://www.jobscentral.com.sg/
http://www.jobstreet.com.sg/
http://www.monster.com.sg/
http://www.singaporejobsonline.com/
Alternatively you can also check out the Career Resources Center for Expatriates: http://www.aasingapore.com/programs/crce.shtml
or add the ‘Recruit’ section of local newspaper ‘Straits Times’ to her list of hunting grounds when you are here.
Good luck job hunting!

what advertising agencies are there in guam?
I’m moving to Guam in a few months and I currently am working in advertising in NY – this is a HUGE move and I was hoping that finding a job in the same industry’s going to make my relocation a lot better. Can anyone recommend ad agencies in the island?
I’ve heard about Big fish Creative, Inc. – is that good?
admin answers:
I don’t know if they are any good or bad in guam but I know that they are not the same as in NY. Guam does not have the same type of accounts like NY nor the media. Therefore expect the pace to be different and the advertising needs diferent.
I would expect a lot more below the line ads and some print ads. Go there and source around. find out the 5 w 1 h and then decide.
Remember to compile your portolio and testimonials rom the employer and clients if possible. It more believeable that college degrees.

Are advertising agencies going out of business? is it unrealistic to want to start a Marketing Firm?
I am interested in Television and Film Advertising and Marketing. I am also interested in Film Production and all other aspects of Marketing. I even have a great idea on how to improve Telemarketing for the Marketers and the customers…. any advice is great.
admin answers:
You can still get a job no problem! Your best bet is to find these jobs in the city, though. You won’t find them just anywhere. New York is the best area in the U.S. for these sorts of jobs. Marketing is going to be essential in the future, especially through all the new technologies coming into play. So online marketing would also be a huge plus

Advertising Agencies in Major US Cities?
I’m a Communications major in college right now, nearing my last three or four semesters of college, give or take.
My major is very broad, encompassing a lot of different fields of old media and new media including television, radio, film, journalism, and advertising.
I’ve taken a lot of advertising classes to fulfill my major and I could really see myself getting into this line of work right out of graduating.
I’m willing to move to a major city somewhere in the US in order to start my career so I was wondering, does anyone know of the best cities to pursue work in advertising?
Thanks in advanced!
admin answers:
http://104inc.com is a great online advertising firm that is based out of southern california. I guess if you’re looking to move you may want to take a look at their website and contact them if you have any questions.

Marketing Degree the Same as Advertising?
I am a high school senior, with very few days left, and I’m still very indecisive about my future. I am very interested in Advertising, but the college that I am looking at, only has a program in Marketing, are they the same? And, with a Marketing/Advertising Degree, what kind of jobs can I get into?
admin answers:
Advertising is one part of Marketing. Marketing actually includes something called “The Four P’s”: Product, Placement, Price, and Promotion. Advertising is one part of Promotion.
So the study of marketing is broader than that of advertising. Advertising focuses only on that one aspect of marketing.
The jobs you get from a marketing degree vary, depending on what sorts of career-related work experiences you gain while you study. So at university, make sure you do marketing and PR related work for clubs on campus, and get a marketing internship. That’ll set you up well to get a job in the field when you graduate.

admin answers:
I hope you have an extremely good personality. In advertising it’s all about selling – and to do that you have to have what it takes to get people to talk to you. Your personality will be what makes you or breaks you.
When people are comfortable talking to you, and you are listening to what they want and need – you will be able to asses that customers situation and develop a program or product that will benefit them, you and the company you are working for.
good luck with the position!

Maria asks…
Are British businesses being forced to spend more money on advertising/marketing due to UK economic downturn?
Is this a good time to get involved in advertising and marketing? Does every cloud really have a silver lining?
admin answers:
The first thing you learn in Business 101 is that:
‘You need to spend more money to get customers during an economic downswing because there are fewer customers out there and reaching a smaller isolated number is harder then reaching a mass audience’
The amount of businesses that understand that… Very few. Thats why many of them go out of business. They haven’t prepared for what every economy will do which is cycle down. Most businesses think that good times last forever so they fail to plan for when things get tough. Many don’t keep cash reserves on hand to float the company through bad times.
Every time you make a sale a portion of that should go to a fund that covers you for several months of expenditures. While you are paying your bills for 3 months and scaling back for a longer haul your comp is struggling to keep their doors open. When they start closing you need to be in a position to grab their customers which in turn allows you to keep your doors open.
Not advertising and going into lock down mode is nothing but a recipe for disaster.
Even if things begin to get better they aren’t going to go from bad to great over night. It will generally be gradual so a recovery, certainly like the one we are in right now, is not going to change tomorrow.
The business who is proactive and not reactive generally will emerge the winner.
While you are getting customers during hard times they are losing them. When things turn around you will emerge as the real winner here.
