Michael asks…
With a limited advertising budget, is a poster from Lamar worth it?
I operate a contractor-based, in-home tutoring business. I am already advertising in a local parenting magazine and with the Yellow Pages. I also have a website.
I’m considering buying a poster (a smaller billboard on a Highway) in the area. The poster I can get is on a very high traffic highway in a city in which many of my parents/clients live.
The poster would be $1,500/month. This would tap pretty much the rest of my advertising budget for a month or two. As consumers, do you think this is worth the money? Would a poster legitimize a business to you and raise your interest? Or do you think I should focus on ads in magazines and a flyer campaign in doctors’ offices, dentists’ offices, etc.?
admin answers:
For that amount of money, I would tap into radio first.

Sandy asks…
What’s up with Coke billboard?
I keep seeing these billboards advertising a 2-pack of 50-oz bottles of Coke, and they say “100 oz of Coke — Enough For Your Meal”. What does that mean? 100 oz is like 3/4 of a gallon! Does it mean that it’s enough to BE a meal by itself? Or it’s enough for my whole family’s meal? Who would drink 3/4 of a gallon of Coke with one meal? And if it’s for one meal, why is it in 2 bottles? I don’t get it!
admin answers:
prlly enough for a meal with a family. including refills.

Carol asks…
How do small businesses decide where to spend their advertising budgets?
Their are so many places to advertise these days. The yellow pages, online, outdoor billboards, local radio, sponsoring teams or events, local newspapers and magazines. How can a small business sort through all of these options?
admin answers:
You have to look at your demographics and at what they are most likely to pay attention to.
Yellow pages are fine for some retail, but have really become a huge (in the cost of larger ads too) of money due to the fact that many places now have 4-5 different versions and usually only keep one book. The only way that they are usually going to really be cost effective anymore is if you really have a business that has some kind of niche that keeps you from being one of many of the same type listed there.
If you own a sign, printing company, or other that relates to team parents and children; sponsoring teams might work some, but is usually more of a courtesy to show some community involvement. Don’t forget direct mail, this can be the most cost effective way to reach specific groups of customers with advertising and coupons and can be based on demographics.
So you ask who my customer is, where they live, and what do they like and you have the best chance of coming up with the best answer.

Donald asks…
If a political candidate has advertising credit leftover can he/she use it for personal use?
Can a political candidate who buys billboards for example use a balance left over with the billboard company for personal use? So, for example, let’s say the candidate uses campaign money in the amount of $50,000 to advertise his campaign but only uses $40,000 of or gets a credit from the billboard company for whatever reason, can the candidate use it to promote a personal business after the campaign is over considering that the money from the billboard company is not refundable and the remaining balance can only be used for billboard advertising?
admin answers:
Actually, the previous answer is wrong. Teh campaign must keep its money separate from the candidate’s personal or toher businesses.
In fact, probably, each campaign must be kept separate, unless the money was given specifically for the candidate to decide which campaign to apply it to.
Many campaigns end in debt, and then even losers have to find a way to raise the money to pay for the services already used. This can be difficult for a losing campaign, but it happens. I think McCain ended the last Presidential campaig n in deep dept (don’t quote me on it though) and had to go on the rubber chicken circuit to raise money, even though he had plenty in other “war chests”.

William asks…
A few questions about designing a billboard?
So, for a project in school, we have to make a billboard advertising one good that was carried along the Silk Road. No one in the history class can repeat a good, and we already signed up for goods- I have to advertise grain.
Can you tell me answers of these questions:
-What is a catchy slogan to advertise grain along the Silk Road (It can be modern. Doesn’t have to be relating to ancient times)
-Can you tell me a little bit about the grain along the Silk Road
THANKS SO MUCH GUYS/GALS!

Viacom/Time Warner Cable dispute?
This is ridiculous.
Read about it here:
LOS ANGELES – “SpongeBob SquarePants” may be getting squeezed off of Time Warner Cable.
Media giant Viacom Inc. said its Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and 16 other channels will go dark for 13 million subscribers at 12:01 a.m. Thursday if a new carriage fee deal with Time Warner Cable is not agreed upon by then.
The impasse would mean “SpongeBob” and other popular shows like Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” and Stephen Colbert’s “The Colbert Report” will be cut off, said spokesman Alex Dudley, a vice president at Time Warner Cable. The nation’s second-largest cable operator primarily serves customers in New York state, the Carolinas, Ohio, Southern California and Texas.
Viacom has asked for fee increases of between 22 percent and 36 percent per channel, an amount that could increase customers’ cable bills, Dudley said. Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew said the requested increase was in the very low double-digit percentage range.
“The issue is that they have asked for an exorbitant increase in their carriage fees and their network ratings are sagging,” Dudley said. “Basically we’re trying to hold the line for our customer.”
Viacom said the increases would cost an extra 23 cents a month per subscriber — which works out to $35.9 million more in total. It said that Americans spend a fifth of their TV time watching Viacom shows but its fees make up less than 2.5 percent of the Time Warner cable bill.
“We make this request because Time Warner Cable has so greatly undervalued our channels for so long,” it said.
“Ultimately, however, if Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV and the rest of our programming is discontinued — over less than a penny per day — we believe viewers will see this behavior by their cable company as outrageous,” it said.
Negotiations are continuing at the highest level, Dudley said.
Viacom accused Time Warner Cable of not negotiating.
“It is our sincere hope that they will come to the table and negotiate a deal,” said McAndrew. The network operator also intends to tell viewers about the dispute in TV ads in 11 major markets.
Part of the disagreement is that most of the popular shows are rerun on Web sites where Viacom collects advertising revenue that it does not share with Time Warner, Dudley said.
“We don’t think that’s fair,” he said. “They’re trying to have their cake and eat it too online, where anybody can get it for free.”
Viacom has staked much of its revenue-growth prospects on its ability to extract higher carriage rates out of its cable and satellite affiliates despite an ad slowdown and weak ratings.
In the third quarter, media network revenue, which accounts for about two-thirds of the total, grew 6 percent to $2.1 billion, despite global ad revenue falling 2 percent, largely because of double-digit percentage growth in affiliate fees and the success of its “Rock Band” video game.
Viacom shares rose 69 cents, or 3.7 percent, to close at $19.26 on Tuesday, while Time Warner Cable shares added $1.56, or 7.7 percent, to $21.76.
The channels that would be affected are: Comedy Central, CMT: Pure Country, Logo, Palladia, MTV, MTV 2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV Tr3s, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nick 2, Nicktoons, Spike, The N, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic, and VH1 Soul.
Pop-up alerts on “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show” Web sites Wednesday morning informed fans that Time Warner Cable customers will lose Comedy Central shows soon and urged them to call the cable company and protest the change.

^Honestly…18 channels? Can Time Warner really take a hit to their cable company as big as this? Will the sides reach an agreement by today? Opinions anyone?
Personally, i think this is stupid. An extra 23 cents a month or $2.76 a year is nothing. Time Warner just needs to give in already so i can watch South Park, Mind of Mencia, all my reality TV shows and definitely SPONGEBOB!
admin answers:
They NEVER learn, Viacom and Time Warner are both at fault. GREED KILLS. They both already make several millions dollars a year. Why cant they just let it go. The NFL network too. Viacom will make they pay $.23 per subscriber so Time warner will raid the bill $5.00. Then the other channels will up their fees too. Here comes $200.00 a month cable bills. Meanwhile we (the consumer) are stuck in the middle. With the transformation to digital TV most of us are forced to have cable.

Looks like a variation of the pop ups that promise a prize for completing a survey. The problem is, the odds of winning are not worth the amount of time it takes to complete the surveys.
These sites make money by referring you to web sites that pay for each visit. You have to click on an awful lot of websites for them to make enough to give away.

Susan asks…
I know this question has been asked many times, but how would I make money from home?
I’ve read many Yahoo Answers Questions about this, and all I see is mow lawns, surveys, babysitting, or fast food. But what about an answer that’s actually unique, that works, and you can do from home?
I know so many ways, but I don’t know how to get started or where to go.
There’s the wonderful world of advertising, which means you can help someone, sell more things. Sounds easy right? Well, first you either need something that attracts many people, and you need to do the hardest part… Find the people! Nobody seems to want to do that, because they can do it themselves. So Advertising isn’t it.
You can buy things from websites & sell them for more on Ebay, Amazon, or any other site! Except, there’s so many people doing that, that the things on Ebay end up being cheaper than on the sites since they rather get rid of the items than to keep it & try to make profit.
You can do amazing services online for people! Like video editing, picture editing, doing things for people on video games, selling virtual money for real money. & so much more! But in this world, nobody trusts eachother to do that, and they think they can do it themselves. So this is once again.. another fail.
Now, I can go on and on about what to do to make money. But none of it works. Surveys are all scams, and it’s all a mess to do the most amazing thing ever. ‘Make money from home’
All I want from this question, is simply. Any of the things listed above, do you think you can point anyone, or me that’s reading this, into the right direction? To those people that need advertising, or services, or things on Ebay. To help those ideas actually work? That would be the best ever, and this would be the most popular “How to make money from home” question in all of Yahoo Answers History.
So if anyone has help, to anything unique that you can do, not mentioned in other Answers. & not an answer that makes you sound like a complete jerk, feel free to mention it, and you will get a best answer, and the thanks from thousands of people.
Note: Anything that spams survey sites will be flagged. Those never work, don’t try it.

Affiliate Marketing, Reselling, and Computer Services, as you listed, are some of the best ways to earn money working from home. However, like you said, there is already tons of competition and it is very difficult to succeed.
I have been successful in the first job you mentioned so I will explain how I got started. Affiliate Marketing is very broad, so I’ll explain one part of it that is easiest to begin with. PPC, or Pay per click advertising, can earn you money with this basic strategy: You pay money to get website visitors to your advertisement page with an affiliate offer. You earn money in commissions from the visitors who decided to buy the product or service. As long as the money you earn from commissions is more than what you’re paying for traffic, then you’re earning a profit.
I started by reading and understanding of the very best guides to help someone get started in PPC:
http://www.nickycakes.com/newbie-guide
You must understand that working from home CAN be very profitable, but don’t fall for get rich quick schemes. I’ve found that you must work harder at home than at a regular job as an employee in order to succeed. Best of luck!

Can we make a website for no-cost at all for our animal funeral services?
Me and My best-friend (aetd96) run an “under-the counter” funeral home. And what I mean by that is we run a funeral service for animals kinda quitely. I have been doing this since I was 10 years old in 2003. I established my animal funeral service b/c in 2003 I have deicded to become a LIC. funeral director for people when I’m old enough. As of now I’m 15 and in the next year I plan on working as an apprentice at a real funeral home. I do this animal service sort-of for practice.
My associates and I have been carring-out our traditions for nearly 6yrs. and we have had 4 members along my side through the years. now I only have 2 besides my self.
We do not charge any money! If we are given money we donate the cash to a local animal charity or shelter. We offer complete services that any that any funeral home would normally offer. We pre-arrange, consualt, make memory cards, obituaries notices, hand-made caskets, and rubbermaid burial vaults. We only bury in owner’s yard not a cemetery. We do memorbila, such as slide shows .and cremation services as well. If cremation is deisered the master of the pet must send the body to a LIC. company, once ashes are returned to the owner we offer what ever they want done. We preform Calling Hours (viewings) and Full-Funeral services as well. This is generally held at your home in the living room, we will re-arrange chairs and sofas to create a funeral home atmosphere and bring our own pink-torchiere lamps for the mood-lights setting as well. Sorry we don’t embalm.
As our moto at my funeral service says…
“Every life is significant, everylife has a story to be told, let us help you tell that story”
I’m serious in what I do, Animals have lives don’t they? They have a story to be told? Why don’t they desvere to have it told? Well I think they do! — And that is why my associates and I do what we do best!
If you are a funeral director and you are reading this I would appreciate your imput, I need some perfessional help. I do want to become a real Mortician in the years to come. I’m 15 so I will be soon. I’m only do the animal services now sort-of as practice.
So I want to create an online website for no cost and to advertise my services.
If you any questions plz. feel free to contact me by email….

How much money can you earn in the Aussie Army reserve?
I dont have a job at the moment because I quit my evil job as a proof reader/administrator at an advertising agency. I want to join the reserve over full time service because I am pursuing other careers that are very difficult to develop a stable career in i.e. modelling, music, acting, writing etc. Then if that fails I can transition into reg army. I want to sign up and do the maximum work hours possible and do my modelling jobs whenever I get them because it pays very well and im at the only time in my life where i can do this kind of work.
So how much money can you potentially earn in the Australian Army Reserve? Is it enough to cover basic costs of living?
Cheers.
Thank Joel, I want to know what the maximum days are a reservist can work so i can calculate a yearly salary.

When I see things like this it makes me sick – President Obama Thong?
Now do you know why we must protect our President?
White House Lawyers Look to Limit Commercial Use of President
Julianna Goldman – Fri Jan 30, 4:16 pm ET
Featured Topics:
Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) — Barack Obama’s popularity makes him a marketer’s dream. Now, the honeymoon may be over for those trying to profit from his appeal.
White House lawyers want to control the use of the president’s image, recognizing the worldwide fascination about Obama’s election, First Amendment free-speech rights and easy access to videos and photos on the Web.
“Our lawyers are working on developing a policy that will protect the presidential image while being careful not to squelch the overwhelming enthusiasm that the public has for the president,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
Obama’s calls for change and his “Yes We Can” campaign mantra are being evoked to sell assembly-required furniture in Ikea’s “Embrace Change” marketing campaign, bargain airfares during Southwest Airlines Inc.’s “Yes You Can” sale and “Yes Pecan” ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc. shops.
“I can’t remember this ever happening to an active politician before, as a spokesperson or as an image for a brand,” said Brad Adgate, director of research for Horizon Media Inc., a New York-based advertising agency. “He’s in the highest profile of any person in the world right now.”
Riding the wave of Obama’s popularity may become a concern when advertisers use his likeness without permission to imply that Obama is endorsing a product or cause. The White House through the years has objected to commercial use of presidential faces, such as footage of President George H.W. Bush in a Cold War-themed 1989 television ad for cold medication.
Presidential Speeches
The National Education Association is running a TV ad with excerpts from a speech Obama gave on July 5, 2007, with the group’s logo behind him.
The educators’ group has previously shown remarks by Obama in Web videos and is confident the president shares a “clear and longstanding” commitment to “real change and real reform in education,” said Steve Snider, NEA’s manager of advertising and broadcast services.
The Web site for McKinstry Co., a Seattle-based mechanical contractor that Obama visited during last year’s presidential campaign, features a YouTube clip of Obama praising its work improving energy efficiency at schools and office buildings. “As president I’ll use companies like McKinstry as a model for the nation,” Obama says. McKinstry spokeswoman Genevieve Guinn said the company bought rights to the video and hasn’t gotten any White House complaints.
Obama’s face is on a full-page newspaper advertisement by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, a lobbying group in Alexandria, Virginia.
Burning Coal
“We figured out how to put a man on the moon in 10 years,” the ad quotes Obama as saying last August. “You can’t tell me we can’t figure out how to burn coal that we mine right here in the United States of America and make it work.” The group also began running a TV ad in December that shows footage of Obama promoting clean-coal energy during a campaign event last September.
The clean coal lobby group told Obama representatives about the ads before the inauguration and received no signals from them that there was any discomfort,
As a record-setting crowd jammed Washington earlier this month for Obama’s inauguration, Obama’s face was featured on thousands of t-shirts, coffee mugs and calendars for sale at stores and street vendors across the capital. Obama’s official inaugural committee got into the act, too, setting up its own memorabilia store.
Malia, Sasha Dolls
Since the Obamas moved into the White House, Michelle Obama objected to the sale by Beanie Babies-maker Ty Inc. of dolls with the same names as her daughters. The company said the Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia dolls weren’t modeled after the first daughters.
A search for Michelle Obama’s name on Google Inc.’s Web site brings up an online ad for J. Crew Group Inc., which got free publicity when the first lady wore a J. Crew outfit on NBC’s “Tonight Show With Jay Leno” last October. “Inauguration Style: Get Looks Like Those Worn by the First Lady” the Web ad says.
Psaki wouldn’t provide details about legal options the White House counsel’s office is considering to deal with commercial use of Obama’s likeness.
The White House lawyers may have to make case-by-case determinations about the best ways to protect the presidential image without tempering enthusiasm or trampling on free-speech protections, said Jonathan Band, an intellectual property lawyer in Washington.
“It will be difficult,” Band said. “Because he is the president of the United States and there was this campaign and everyone’s proud, I think the First Amendment will be applied much more broadly with respect to people wanting to use an image of the president than it would be with

Yeah it makes me sick too! Anything with an Obama name or logo or a tv commercial with Obama’s appearance or speech? I definitely want to boycott any product or company using Obama for its commercials. Why do these companies come up with these strategies? America is almost half Democrats and half Republicans and Independents. If you have Obama on a product don’t you think they’ll turnoff those republicans? From now on I’m not buying anything with an obvious Obama sign or an Obama campaign look alike logo.
I want to throw a shoe at Obama when I see him!!

Around the world, atheists hit road to knock down God
by Prashant Rao Prashant Rao – Mon Jan 19, 1:07 am ET AFP/File – An artists impression of a London bus with the slogan ‘There’s probably no God. Stop worrying …
LONDON (AFP) – An atheist drive to persuade people that God doesn’t exist is catching on in a surprising fashion — on the sides of buses in a growing number of countries around the world.
With the concise message “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life,” the campaign took to the road in Britain this month, while similar drives are underway or planned in Spain, Italy, Canada and Australia.
The British campaign was originally floated by comedy writer Ariane Sherine in a newspaper column in June, and is hoping to reach the majority of the country’s population in some fashion or another over the next three weeks.
“We could never have imagined it would have gotten this big, and we would have raised quite this amount of cash,” campaign co-founder Jon Worth, a political blogger and website designer, told AFP.
“It’s astounding.”
Sherine wrote her column after advertisements began appearing on central London buses directing passers-by to a website that told those who did not accept Christianity that they would suffer for eternity in hell.
Soon after it was published, Worth contacted her asking if he could set up a pledgebank based on her idea, and shortly thereafter, the Atheist Bus Campaign began taking donations, initially hoping to raise 5,500 pounds (6,200 euros, 8,200 dollars).
To date, it has raised upwards of 140,000 pounds, enough to pay for advertisements on 800 buses across Britain — 200 in central London alone — along with 1,000 posters in London’s Underground trains and two video screens in a popular Tube station, all for a full month ending in early February.
Unsurprisingly, the campaign has struck a nerve among God-fearing commuters, prompting around 200 complaints to Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), which regulates commercials here.
By way of comparison, the most complaints the ASA has ever received over an advert was 1,600.
The watchdog needs just one complaint to investigate an advertisement, which are judged on a variety of factors including harm, offence, taste and deceny as well as factual accuracy, but will wait until next week to decide whether or not to probe the Atheist Bus Campaign’s ads.
“A few religious people have complained to the ASA, which seems rather odd, as if they (the ASA) will be able to make a judgment about the evidence on that sort of issue,” said Peter Cave, chair of the Humanist Philosopher’s Group, which advises the British Humanist Association.
Along with opposition in Britain, attempts to engineer a similar campaign in Australia have run into obstacles, with the country’s biggest outdoor advertising agency APN Outdoor deciding to reject a bid by the Atheist Foundation of Australia for ad space.
“Any company really has the right to refuse a service to a customer, but in this instance, you have to wonder,” foundation president David Nicholls told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Atheists in Italy and Spain, however, have had more success with their attempts.
Buses with a similar slogan to the Atheist Bus Campaign’s message, translated into Catalan, began appearing on two routes in Barcelona on Monday, with plans to extend the campaign to the rest of the country.
In Italy, meanwhile, buses with the slogan “The bad news is that God does not exist. The good news is that we do not need him” will begin traversing the northern Italian city of Genoa on February 4.
Here in Britain, apart from opposition from religious groups, some atheists are unhappy with the inclusion of the word “probably”, principally added so that it would adhere to British advertising rules.
Cave, though not in agreeance with the word’s inclusion, noted that the campaign is trying to make a broader point.
“I can see no evidence for God just as I can see no evidence for pineapples floating around the moon,” he said.
“I don’t say there probably aren’t any pineapples floating around the moon, I just say I know there aren’t any pineapples floating around the moon. But, it’s a piece of marketing, and I think it’s good because it makes people think.”

Realtors: Would you change your advertising if presented with the following scenario?
Let’s say you work in a wide-spread area, both city and country properties in the MLS. You advertise your listings/yourself in a “homes” magazine and it’s the only one available in your area. Most agencies use the magazine, which is distributed for free. A year-long contract will get you the discounted rate of $60 per page. The magazine is black & white newspaper print of poor quality and the pages are in random order.
A new magazine becomes available. It’s full color, glossy pages and has listings arranged by location and price. The magazine offers to add your listings for free, permanently, no strings attached. They also offer the option to buy advertsing for yourself at the same rate as the black & white magazine, with shorter term contracts. In addition, everything goes online for free.
Would you use the free service? Would you abandon the poor quality magazine and advertise in the nicer one, even though your listings are already in there, by location and price, for free?
Do you see any advantages or disadvantages of the new magazine?
How would you feel about your listings being comingled with other agencies listings, for the purpose of buyers being able to find what they want more easily?
admin answers:
Why not use both and see which one works better. The problem with the color one is that it’s new and circulation is low. It’s important to look at circulation and how many people will see your ad. If the B/W is 60 and gets 10,000 circulation, this is .006 per hit. If the color is 60 and only gets 5,000, the price per hit is double.
HOWEVER, color is ALWAYS better. I hate the B/W ones. Very poor. And when realtors try to place too many listings on a page, it just doesn’t work.

Advertising for escort vacancies?
I’m starting an escort agency on the outskirts of London. Does anyone know of a decent website where I can advertise for escorts wanted that’s effective?
I have asked this question before on here and got the answer below.
‘A decent website that is effective is Craigslist under adult gigs. It’s cheap, easy, and you get to dictate what is on your page as opposed to adult help wanted which will make your classifieds full of other ads’.
I did try Craigslist as suggested, but found I was either getting a lot of timewaters or the ad got deleted despite other similar ads being on there which seemed to stay. When I contacted CL customer services to ask why my ad kept being deleted I found them about as much help as a chocolate fire guard.
Can anyone recommend any other websites?

Robert asks…
Should I be applying to other companies while I’m interviewing with one?
I’m in my internship semester at college, which means that I don’t have any daytime classes but will have to spend most my time on work placement. I decided to go a step ahead and just look for a paid full time job that’s relevant with my field of study. I listed a lot of companies to apply to, but didn’t get around to send my resume to many.
Anyway, one of the first companies I applied to just interviewed me today, and a follow-up is scheduled. It is a prestigious media group, where I would be hired to report and write for their newest lifestyle magazine; but the chief editor told me that there would be opportunities for me to transfer to the other magazines, newspapers, and TV stations in the group. I’ve a feeling that I will end up working here, but I can’t know that for sure because it’s still the very early stages of our negotiations.
My campus sent me an internship form to fill out; I’ll have to name at least 3 companies with their contact persons. If I am already working, I could submit a letter from my employer and count that as my internship as long as I can justify how it will apply the things I’ve learnt from my college classes. I have applied to several “companies”, but really my major is performing arts and most of the organizations I applied to are theatre communities from which I am expecting no pay. I sent resumes, but most didn’t reply, and the one that did wasn’t currently recruiting, so I wouldn’t have contact persons for those organizations either. The other companies I considered included advertising companies, embassies, UN bodies, and international schools, but I didn’t get around to write to any of them.
Should I be applying to other companies and comparing their offers? Or should I just blindly stick to the good offer I currently have my hands on? This offer is rare enough and I don’t take it for granted, but do smart job seekers always have a back up plan? Or is it better to not apply to others at all than to risk turning down a good offer I might not be able to follow up on?
admin answers:
wait for the follow-up, before you apply to other companies.

Susan asks…
Changing my major during junior year?
I am 20 years old and a junior. I am an elementary education major but now that I am getting into my major courses, I really do not think teaching is for me. My parent’s are telling me to just stick with it and get the degree, and that I can do other things. The truth is that I can hardly do my school work for these education classes because I am just NOT interested in it! And I am scared to death of student teaching. I am seriously thinking about changing my major to International Business or something in Mass Comm (PR, Advertising). I feel like one or two more semesters in college would be better if I was more interested in the subject.
What do you all think? What should I do? And how should I get my parent’s to understand….
admin answers:
Change your major and just take courses during the summer at a junior college to save money or online, to speed things up. Just tell your parents that teaching is something that you need to be passionate about and you realize that you aren’t. Your parents are worried that you will flip flop when things get hard or boring, but you have to commit to your next major and finish it no matter how horrible it may turn out to be. Because everyone knows that you don’t have to end up with a job that has anything to do with your major.
Good luck.

Rules waived to add security along 220 miles of AZ border
By Brady McCombs and Howard Fischer
Arizona Daily Star Capitol Media Services
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.02.2008
advertisementThe Department of Homeland Security laid claim Tuesday to at least 220 of the 350 miles of U.S.-Mexican border in Arizona to build fences, roads and towers without having to comply with environmental regulations.
A congressionally mandated deadline to have 670 miles of fences, barriers, roads and lighting along the U.S.-Mexico border in place by the end of the year drove Secretary Michael Chertoff to invoke the waiver. To date, the agency has completed 309 miles of projects, leaving it with 361 miles to complete in nine months.
What Tuesday’s order does, Chertoff said, is ensure that the rest of what is necessary can be built without having to complete full-blown environmental-impact statements — and without fearing that one or more sections will become tied up in court.
The announcement, however, was greeted by disdain from local environmental-protection groups and a pair of Arizona legislators.
“I think every American should be up in arms that the federal government is waiving these laws,” said Sean Sullivan, co-chairman of the Sierra Club Rincon Group, which covers Southeastern Arizona. “They are just going to bulldoze ahead in order to get all the projects they had lined up completed.”
The waiver encompasses nearly two-thirds of Arizona’s international border, including swaths of land from as far west as Yuma to near the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Some of the larger expanses revealed by Homeland Security include:
? More than 60 miles stretching from about seven miles east of Sasabe to south of Fort Huachuca in Cochise County.
? More than 55 miles on the Tohono O’odham Reservation, from just east of the village of Ali Ak Chin to near Sasabe.
? More than 50 miles across the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge west of Lukeville.
? More than 20 miles from east of Douglas to near the Arizona-New Mexico state line.
In total, Homeland Security identified 13 areas in Arizona. The detailed plans — or what’s already under construction or has been completed — for each of the areas weren’t available Tuesday. None is a new project, said Amy Kudwa, Homeland Security spokeswoman.
“We are simply moving forward with their expeditious construction,” Kudwa said.
The projects will fall under the general category of “pedestrian and vehicle fence construction, towers, sensors, cameras, detection equipment and roads in the vicinity of the border,” Homeland Security said.
It’s the fourth time Chertoff has used the waiver, created in the 2005 Real ID Act to waive compliance with federal regulations for all border projects. He invoked the waiver on the previous three occasions for individual projects: in October 2007 for construction of two miles of fencing in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area in Southeastern Arizona; in January 2007 on the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range in Southwestern Arizona; and in 2005 in San Diego.
Each use has elicited harsh criticism from environmentalists and critics who say no one person should have such overreaching power.
Chertoff’s use of that 2005 waiver authority “has created a lawless border,” said Matt Clark, Southwest representative of Defenders of Wildlife.
The waiver continues a pattern of neglecting important environmental, health and safety laws to build an ineffective and environmentally damaging border wall, Clark said.
“That arbitrary deadline has resulted in lawlessness along the border and a disregard for environmental health and safety laws,” he said.
In a statement, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., called the use of the waiver “outrageous,” saying neither her office nor local or state elected officials were consulted.
“This is unacceptable,” Giffords said. “A federal government construction project of this magnitude will impact significantly on local residents, communities and the environment. Those of us who live on the border and represent border communities deserve a seat at the table.”
U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., called such a broad and poorly conceived waiver lazy.
“Secretary Chertoff is abusing the authority granted him by the Congress with this ham-handed waiver,” Grijalva said in a statement. “With the stroke of his pen, he overturns 36 laws — some of which have been protecting our resources and our health for more than a century — in an area stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean.”
In a prepared statement Tuesday, Chertoff said his actions are justified.
“The flow of illegal traffic through the border region imperils our ability to fight terrorism by stopping the illegal entry of terrorists, and exposes our border communities and the rest of the United States to the ill effects of drug smuggling, human smuggling and gang activity,” he said. “Illegal border traffic has also caused severe and profound impacts to the environment.”
Invoking the waiver will prevent legal wrangling that could delay projects, he said. That’s exactly what happened last year when two environmental groups sought to halt construction of fences and vehicle barriers along the southern edge of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Challengers said federal officials did not properly consider ways to minimize the impact of the new construction.
Chertoff eventually invoked the waiver, and construction continued.
Chertoff denied that environmental concerns are being ignored. He said that there is at least a “draft environmental assessment or environmental impact statement” for all of the miles where his agency is erecting new pedestrian fencing. And he said most of the other projects — aside from fences to keep pedestrians out — also will have those kinds of assessments.

Dear Statistics Students:
I recently landed a Job at International Enterprises. Parts of my job responsibilities include organizing an advertising campaign for one of our clients. I have run into some trouble with this. I called the math department at your school and they referred me to your professor who referred me to you.
The restaurant chain Chicken Licken has asked our company to write and design their new ads. They offer a deal where for $8.95 the customer chooses one of five main courses: a chicken sandwich, a chicken breast, chicken pot pie, chicken sticks, or vegetarian lasagna. With each meal the customer also has the choice of two side dishes. The restaurant offers French fries, mashed potatoes with gravy, baked potatoes, hash browns, bread, salad, soup, biscuits, cottage cheese, or fruit. So in total, there are ten side dishes. The meal also comes with dessert. Here are the four choices: pie, ice cream, cake, or cookies. As part of the ad, the company wanted to know the number of different possible meals. After consulting a book, I calculated there are 1800 possible meals, which seemed like a nice number to use in advertising.
I told a friend about my project and she said that she had read an article (“Teacher’s Diligence Finds Fame, Free Lunch,” The Morning Call (Allentown), Jan. 21, 1995, Joseph P. Ferry) about how Boston Chicken (now known as Boston Market) had run a similar ad and has miscalculated the number of possible meals. Apparently they offered sixteen side dishes and the customer was allowed to chose three of them with each meal. The company’s ad (apparently featured quarterback Joe Montana) claimed that there were 3,360 possible combinations of three side dishes chosen from the sixteen offered. A high school mathematics teacher, Bob Swaim, Convinced them that they had made a mistake. He and thirty of his student received free lunch from Boston Chicken. He also appeared on the CBS program “Good Morning America.” The teacher argued that whoever had done the mathematics had confused the concepts of permutations and combinations. By his calculations there were only 816 different combinations available. He also noted that the ad did not allow the possibility of choosing a side dish more than once and that his formula did. After hearing about this I began to question the calculations that I had made. I don’t want to be embarrassed by having the same thing happen to Chicken Licken.
Since you are college students, I have every faith in your abilities to help me out. I need to know how many possible meals there are. I would also appreciate it if you could tell me how Boston Chicken and Bob Swaim arrived at their different answers. Thank for all of your help.
Yours Sincerely,
J.R. Doe
admin answers:
the formula for choosing 2 things from a set of n things is n*(n-1)/2
If you don’t believe it check it for small numbers.
To choose 2 things from a set of three object a,b,c you can choose ab, bc, and ac. 3 combinations. and 3*2/2 = 3
To choose 2 things from a set of 4 objects, you can choose ab, ac, ad, bc, bd, cd. 6 choices. 4*3/2 = 6
so for 10 things, there are 10*9/2 = 45 choices.
So with 5 main courses, 45 side dish choices, and 4 dessert choices, you have
5*45*4 = 900 choices.
PS: It’s a common mistake is to think that the number of side dish choices would be 10*9, 10 choices for the first side dish, 9 for the second. The error here is that you are counting soup and salad as being different from salad and soup, when there is actually no difference. That’s why you have to divide by 2.

Can someone tell me about the use of logic in advertising slogans?
I’m working on a project which investigates advertising slogans and for my conclusion i need to describe what i learned about the use of logic in advertising slogans. Any help is greatly appreaciated.
admin answers:
Logic? It is more competitive positioning that should be used in the slogan. The logic comes from allowing the position to make sense from a value perspective. Think Volvo – Safe Cars. Their slogan is Volvo – For Life. The logic is that you want to live. Also Walmart with Always Low Prices. The logic lies in the fact that you like your money.
These are not based on logic, but logic plays a role. They are based on “positioning.”

Sandra asks…
What is the video about a world of advertising slogans and characters?
I saw a video (on youtube possibly) which was a little epic advertising vid. Everything in it was a slogan. It began with two policement chasing McDonald. And ended with the advertising world falling apart and we zoomed through space with a whole tonne of space advertisements filling the screen. There a scene in a zoo and in a cafe (which got blown up by Mcdonald).
Anyway if anyone knows this and can provide a link or a title I would be very grateful!
Cheers!!
