Are you bothered by the amount of advertising in society?

Advertising is everywhere – on tv, on radio, in movies, in subways, on the sides of buses, in public toilets, on billboards, on taxis, on blimps, on t-shirts, on posters, at music events, at sporting events, in mailboxes, in e-mails, on the web….. Do you ever get tired of people trying to sell you stuff?

Are shop owners in Scotland paid to have advertising on the front of their shops?

When I visit there I see “Kit Kat” and all kinds of other advertising along side the name of their shops; sometimes I can’t even see what the shop sells for all the ad signage the shops have.
I’m assuming the owners are paid so I’d like to know how much one store owner can earn, on average, in one year.
Seems like a good idea that should cross the Atlantic and save us here from all the huge erected signs and billboards that clog up our roadsides.

admin answers:

a good idea that you can’t even see what the store sells because there are so many signs blocking it, i don’t think so..they’ll loose more money that way..

Does anyone else want to rip the head off of that little Geico gecko?

I’m tired of seeing it and hearing it. Seems like I can’t go 5 minutes and he’s either on the TV, radio, or advertising billboard. How much money is Geico spending on ads? Obviously, they don’t need to make any more money off of me.

admin answers:

No he’s awesome, I just switched to Geico and saved a bunch on my car insurance.

Best advertising for electronics store: newspaper ad, radio, or billboard?

I’m trying to advertise my electronics store and I initially wanted to post an ad in the major local newspaper. I also thought of a 15-30 sec. ad in a radio station, or a billboard ad on a high-volume expressway.
I believe the most expensive is the newspaper ad since it goes from $400 for a 2″x2″ to $1600 for a 6×4. And I don’t think a 4×2 ad (with a bunch of prices) in a 12×14 newspaper page is eye-catching.
Basically I’m trying to find the best way to advertise my local store without going bankrupt. Although I’ll be selling most of the high-end items stores like CompUSA or Circuit City sell ($300+ items), I want to emphasize a low-price guarantee, better service, and “if you want it, we’ll find it”.
What’s the best advertising for that? Right now I don’t want to advertise through the web.
Thanks.

admin answers:

You need to look at what the Internet can do for you. If you have an electronics store your best demographic is probably somewhat computer savvy.

AND you can now market to specific zip codes on the Internet so you can be much more targeted and therefore cost effective.

I wouldn’t exactly consider myself a specialist but I do own and promote my own website and here’s some sites I use to great success:

What are effective ways of advertising my Mary Kay business over the Internet?

I am a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant and need ideas of effective ways of advertising on the Internet.
I have a website that I can lead people to.
I do not need to make a website. I already have a great one. I just want to know how I can either get people to the website I already have or how I can get leads over the Internet of people that would like facials.

admin answers:

Your first step should be getting into the Google and Yahoo search engines. This is easy and free. You want people to be able to search “Mary Kay” and “Your Town” and have your website come up. Secondly, I would make weekly posts on Craigslists.com. Doing this is also easy and free it a great way to promote your website and announce Mary Kay makeover parties and whatnot. Lastly, if you sell product from your website, I would suggest using Google AdWords. This places little advertisements about your website directly in front of the demographic you would want to be advertising to. AdWords can really narrow down your target audience for you with this pay-per-click program. But I would only recommend this if you are actually selling product from your website so you have the best chance of seeing a return from your investment. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck with your venture!

Where can I find free advertising for my internet store?

I have just started an internet store and have zero advertising money. Does anyone have ideas on free advertising to attract buyers to my store?

admin answers:

Create Banner ads to post on other websites that will allow you to promote your site there as well as getting their link on your site with use of their own banner ad as well…great way of networking and yes you could both make monies off of clicks to each other’s site. You could network yourself and others through a creative “favorite links page” where you’ll be able to display other sites’ ads on your site. That’s what I’m doing! Takes time…but after your first year, you’ll be glad you did this…it helps…you’ll need to do some researching on your own to figure out how to make monies using other websites links on your site…depends on the market.

Does anyone else think that Radio and Internet Advertising doesn’t really work? TV is the best outlet?

With radio they really cant tell how many are listing its all just based on unrealistic surveys stating silly figures to boost the Station rate cards I think.
The Nielsen rating system is not 100% fact ! ?, a guessing game in truth?

admin answers:

I listen to more radio than watching tv so radio advertising works for me.

Google Takes Heat Over App Security

A major software attack on mobile phones has put pressure on Google Inc. to do more to secure its online store for smartphone applications.

The company behind the now ubiquitous Android operating system came under fire after computer-security experts last week uncovered more than 50 malicious applications that were uploaded to and distributed from Google’s Android Market.

Some security experts said the incident shows Google, which doesn’t inspect Android apps before they are published, needs to do more to try to ensure the apps are safe before they are offered to smartphone users.

Google largely relies on users to rate apps and raise the alarm about any problems with them. It also requires consumers to give their consent for an app to access their personal data. But that approach isn’t enough, according to Chris Wysopal, chief technology officer of computer-security firm Veracode. “App stores need to get serious about vetting code before it is available for customer download,” Mr. Wysopal wrote on his blog.

Google has said 58 malicious apps were uploaded to Android Market and then downloaded to around 260,000 devices before Google removed the affected apps last Tuesday evening. It isn’t clear how many users activated the applications, a Google spokesman said.

Unlike Apple Inc. or BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd., Google doesn’t have employees dedicated to approving apps submitted to its store. Google said it removes apps that violate its policies, and has some internal measures to identify offenders.

While that may leave Google’s Android Market more vulnerable in some respects, security experts say all mobile operating systems are open to similar kinds of attacks. In the past, Apple has also pulled apps from its App Store after they were discovered to send information about users and their phones to outside parties without the users’ knowledge or consent.

The apps involved in the latest incident were corrupted versions of legitimate products from three different developers. The apps, which included Super Guitar Solo, Advanced Barcode Scanner, Bubble Shoot and dozens of others, were adulterated with a malicious code called “DroidDream” that could compromise sensitive personal data, including the IMSI number of the user’s phone, a unique identifier that carriers try to protect.

The malware was configured to run between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m., when phone users were less likely to notice unusual activity, according to mobile-security provider Lookout, which detected several of the apps.

Mr. Wysopal, of Veracode, said the malware compromised many older Android devices it was installed on by gaining so-called root permissions, raising the risk they would download more malware on their own from sources other than the Android Market. Security experts said this is the first time they have seen a corrupt Android program gain such access.

On March 5, Rich Cannings, who heads Google’s Android security team, wrote on a Google blog that the company had removed the bad apps from the Android Market, remotely removed them from affected devices, suspended the accounts of developers it believes were associated with the attacks, and contacted law enforcement about the incident. It also sent security updates to the devices involved that Google says prevents attackers from accessing any more information from them.

Google also said it is taking other steps to keep malicious applications out of the Android Market, but declined to specify those measures.

The incident followed prior complaints about Android’s alleged security vulnerabilities. A Rice University professor recently discovered that Android didn’t automatically encrypt data that users send and receive when using Google’s calendar service, meaning someone could exploit the system to obtain users’ calendar data. A Google spokesman previously said Android soon would begin to encrypt the data.

Still, Android’s growth has continued unabated. It held 31.2% of the U.S. smartphone market in the three months ended in January, up from 23.5% the previous three months, while Research in Motion fell to second place, with 30.4%, followed by Apple, with 24.7%, according to comScore.
