With a limited advertising budget, is a poster from Lamar worth it?

I operate a contractor-based, in-home tutoring business. I am already advertising in a local parenting magazine and with the Yellow Pages. I also have a website.

I’m considering buying a poster (a smaller billboard on a Highway) in the area. The poster I can get is on a very high traffic highway in a city in which many of my parents/clients live.

The poster would be $1,500/month. This would tap pretty much the rest of my advertising budget for a month or two. As consumers, do you think this is worth the money? Would a poster legitimize a business to you and raise your interest? Or do you think I should focus on ads in magazines and a flyer campaign in doctors’ offices, dentists’ offices, etc.?

I keep seeing these billboards advertising a 2-pack of 50-oz bottles of Coke, and they say “100 oz of Coke — Enough For Your Meal”. What does that mean? 100 oz is like 3/4 of a gallon! Does it mean that it’s enough to BE a meal by itself? Or it’s enough for my whole family’s meal? Who would drink 3/4 of a gallon of Coke with one meal? And if it’s for one meal, why is it in 2 bottles? I don’t get it!

How do small businesses decide where to spend their advertising budgets?

Their are so many places to advertise these days. The yellow pages, online, outdoor billboards, local radio, sponsoring teams or events, local newspapers and magazines. How can a small business sort through all of these options?

admin answers:

You have to look at your demographics and at what they are most likely to pay attention to.
Yellow pages are fine for some retail, but have really become a huge (in the cost of larger ads too) of money due to the fact that many places now have 4-5 different versions and usually only keep one book. The only way that they are usually going to really be cost effective anymore is if you really have a business that has some kind of niche that keeps you from being one of many of the same type listed there.
If you own a sign, printing company, or other that relates to team parents and children; sponsoring teams might work some, but is usually more of a courtesy to show some community involvement. Don’t forget direct mail, this can be the most cost effective way to reach specific groups of customers with advertising and coupons and can be based on demographics.
So you ask who my customer is, where they live, and what do they like and you have the best chance of coming up with the best answer.

If a political candidate has advertising credit leftover can he/she use it for personal use?

Can a political candidate who buys billboards for example use a balance left over with the billboard company for personal use? So, for example, let’s say the candidate uses campaign money in the amount of $50,000 to advertise his campaign but only uses $40,000 of or gets a credit from the billboard company for whatever reason, can the candidate use it to promote a personal business after the campaign is over considering that the money from the billboard company is not refundable and the remaining balance can only be used for billboard advertising?

admin answers:

Actually, the previous answer is wrong. Teh campaign must keep its money separate from the candidate’s personal or toher businesses.

In fact, probably, each campaign must be kept separate, unless the money was given specifically for the candidate to decide which campaign to apply it to.

Many campaigns end in debt, and then even losers have to find a way to raise the money to pay for the services already used. This can be difficult for a losing campaign, but it happens. I think McCain ended the last Presidential campaig n in deep dept (don’t quote me on it though) and had to go on the rubber chicken circuit to raise money, even though he had plenty in other “war chests”.

admin answers:

There are no hard and fast rules but there are two basic methods for charging clients: commission and fee.

The commission method will be a straight percentage of the media budget. The standard commission is 15% but the rate will vary depending on the depth of services provided and the size of the media budget. Very large advertisers will negotiate lower commission rates. Smaller advertisers will pay full rates. Any hard costs, such as studio time, talent, photography, printing and travel will be additional and may or may not be marked up.

For the fee model, the agency will estimate the hours required for a project and multiply by their blended hourly rate. They will then charge a monthly retainer fee at one twelfth of the estimated amount. The more efficient will provide periodic updates and highlight any variations from the original estimate that may result in adjustments.

Yearly, my company spends 2-5 million on billboard, TV etc advertising just to create awareness of our branded and popular product.
Marketing wise, Red Bull are the king of the soft drink trade. They took a completely different strategy than their competitors and now they are one of the worlds most recognized youth brands, with large scale exposure in every country in the world.
They started with an extremely low budget – but have managed to become a household and more importantly one of the coolest most respected brands in today’s society.

Almost all companies launching or revamping a brand today are looking at Red Bulls advertising strategy and seeing what they can learn from it.

In terms of brand image, youth respectability and budget – guerrilla advertising and selected sponsorship have always worked well for emerging brands.

TV and billboard advertising are wasted on such a low budget. That sort of money could give you a healthy chunk of brand presence in some selected markets alongside a large slice of viral or traditional internet marketing.

Brand image, creative marketing and solid brand building should always come before gimmicks, rewards, vouchers, competitions etc… The latter options just devalue a brand in the long term.

For the amount of money you are talking about, you must be employing a advertising agency? Probably time to rip up that contract and find a new one?

Just do not jump into the first thing you find. Do some homework and check them out.
It all depends, every area is different, and high traffic (in demand) locations are going to be far more expensive than others, as are size.

The vinyl itself and creation of the billboard will probably run you close to $2K alone, then if you are lucky, you may be looking at $2K a month, but probably safer estimate to double that on up to $10K+… but again, like any other form of real estate, it’s all about location, location, location. However, your outdoor advertiser may be able to offer alternatives as well that meets your needs and budget.

I find this whole “marketing for a baby” to be a disgusting show of privileged entitlement.
They’re impatient with the current system of adoption, how well do you think they’ll deal with a stubborn child.

I guess they expect to capitalize on the poor economy in Detroit and hopes some poor girl will hand over her baby.
I’m sure she’ll have the best of care, after all she’s growing them their very OWN(ed) infant, until she gives birth and signs off. Then she’s on her own to deal with the loss of her child.
And before someone argues “open adoption”, it’s a quaint concept, but not legally enforceable.

Republicans will present this week a 2012 budget proposal that would cut more than $4 trillion from federal spending projected over the next decade and transform the Medicare health program for the elderly, a move that will dramatically reshape the budget debate in Washington.

The budget has been prepared by Rep. Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican and the new chairman of the House Budget Committee, and it represents the most complete attempt so far by Republicans to make good on their promises during the 2010 midterm elections to cut government spending and deficits.

Though Rep. Ryan based the Medicare portion of his budget on a previous plan created in collaboration with a Democrat, Alice Rivlin, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and long-time budget expert, the current plan isn’t likely to get much Democratic support. Instead, it will set up a broad debate over spending and the role of government heading into the 2012 general election.

The plan would essentially end Medicare, which now pays most of the health-care bills for 48 million elderly and disabled Americans, as a program that directly pays those bills. Mr. Ryan and other conservatives say this is necessary because of the program’s soaring costs. Medicare cost $396.5 billion in 2010 and is projected to rise to $502.8 billion in 2016. At that pace, spending on the program would have doubled between 2002 and 2016.

Mr. Ryan’s proposal would apply to those currently under the age of 55, and for those Americans would convert Medicare into a “premium support” system. Participants from that group would choose from an array of private insurance plans when they reach 65 and become eligible, and the government would pay about the first $15,000 in premiums. Those who are poorer or less healthy would receive bigger payments than others.

“There is nobody saying that Medicare can stay in its current path,” Mr. Ryan said on Fox News Sunday. “We should not be measuring ourselves against some mythical future of Medicare that isn’t sustainable.”

The proposal would also convert Medicaid, the health program for the poor, into a series of block grants to give states more flexibility. And it is expected to suggest significant cuts in Social Security, while proposing fewer details on how to achieve them.

The federal government expects to spend about $275 billion in 2011 on Medicaid, the program that provides medical care to the poor and disabled, up from $117.9 billion in 2000. The Congressional Budget Office projects Medicaid spending will roughly double by 2021.

Conservative activists who are familiar with the Ryan plan said they expect it to call for a fundamental overhaul of the tax system, with a 25% top rate for both individuals and corporations, compared to the current 35% top rate. It is expected to raise about the same amount of money as the current system, however. Lawmakers already are considering ways to accomplish that by reducing or eliminating some deductions and other tax breaks.

Some conservatives also expected the budget plan to tout a temporary tax change that would let U.S. multinationals bring home as much as $1 trillion in profits at a greatly reduced tax rate. That money currently is parked overseas, beyond the reach of U.S. corporate taxation.

Mr. Ryan and other Republicans on Sunday made it plain a primary goal in advancing the budget plan is to start setting the terms of a debate for the 2012 election, and to move beyond the debate over trimming tens of billions in spending during the remaining six months of the current fiscal year. The government could partially close on Friday if no deal is reached.

Democratic and Republican negotiators have reached agreement on how to divide up $33 billion in cuts for this year, a congressional aide familiar with the talks said Sunday. Specific trims haven’t been set, but amounts have been allocated to broad categories like agriculture and interior.

Democrats are pushing to meet the target in part by cuts to mandatory programs, such as agricultural subsidies.

Mr. Ryan wouldn’t be more specific in the “Fox News Sunday” interview about his spending reduction targets, saying Republicans were still working on the numbers. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the government is on track to spend $45.77 trillion in the next 10 years, and that total deficits will amount to nearly $12 trillion if current policies are extended.

By suggesting sweeping changes to Medicare, as well as Medicaid and Social Security, Republican leaders are gambling that Americans are worried enough about the growing national debt to accept overhauling social programs that now cover medical costs or provide monthly incomes for a substantial swath of the public.

As the debate in Congress has shifted to how much to cut federal spending, instead of how much more to spend for stimulus programs or other efforts to prop up the economy, lawmakers in both parties, and President Barack Obama, have said there is no way to make a significant dent in projected deficits without some action to overhaul Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid, which make up 60% of the budget.

Mr. Ryan said Sunday his plan would propose capping overall federal spending at close to “historic levels,” which were closer to 20% of GDP during the 1990s through 2008.

Democrats say the GOP plan will leave millions exposed to financial risks. The Medicare premium subsidies would grow more slowly than health costs, they say, so seniors would end up with less coverage.

“All this does is shift the risk and burden of rising health-care costs to seniors on Medicare,” said Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D., Md.), the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee. “You’re on your own with the insurance industry.”

The plan’s supporters say it would cut costs without sacrificing quality by introducing competition among insurers.

Mr. Ryan isn’t alone in attempting to move the budget debate beyond the 2011 fight and Mr. Obama’s 2012 blueprint. A bipartisan group of senators led by Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.) and Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R., Ga.) and known as the “Gang of Six” is working on a proposal to cut $4 trillion from the projected federal deficit, building from recommendations of President Obama’s deficit commission.

Mr. Warner said he is concerned that Mr. Ryan’s plan will rely too heavily on cutting social programs, and not take aim at defense spending or “look at major tax reform that would actually raise revenues.”

Ms. Rivlin said in an interview Sunday she would have preferred a plan that phased in more quickly and left a traditional Medicare program as a default option for seniors. But overall she supported Mr. Ryan’s idea. “What Democrats have to realize is we have to do something,” Ms. Rivlin said. “Current policy on Medicare is not sustainable. You can worry about how you structure a premium support program, but I think it’s a good way to think about the future of Medicare.”

Playing a game of political chicken, Democratic senators who fled Wisconsin to stymie restrictions on public-employee unions said Sunday they planned to come back from exile soon, betting that even though their return will allow the bill to pass, the curbs are so unpopular they’ll taint the state’s Republican governor and legislators.

The Republicans rejected the idea that the legislation would hurt the GOP. “If you think this is a bad bill for Republicans, why didn’t you stand up in the chamber and debate us about it three weeks ago?” said Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald. “People think it’s absolutely ridiculous that these 14 senators have not been in Wisconsin for three weeks.”

Protests continued Sunday at the state capitol in Madison.

The Wisconsin standoff, which drew thousands of demonstrators to occupy the capitol in Madison for days at a time, has come to highlight efforts in other states to address budget problems in part by limiting the powers and benefits accorded public-sector unions.

Sen. Mark Miller said he and his fellow Democrats intend to let the full Senate vote on Gov. Scott Walker’s “budget-repair” bill, which includes the proposed limits on public unions’ collective-bargaining rights. The bill, which had been blocked because the missing Democrats were needed for the Senate to have enough members present to vote on it, is expected to pass the Republican-controlled chamber.

He said he thinks recent polls showing voter discontent with Mr. Walker over limits on bargaining rights have been “disastrous” for the governor and Republicans and give Democrats more leverage to seek changes in a broader two-year budget bill Mr. Walker proposed Tuesday.

Before Sunday’s developments, Mr. Walker said he wouldn’t be swayed by the polls. “If I governed by polls I’d still be in the state Assembly,” Mr. Walker said on Friday. “I won reelection twice as county executive in an area of the state that went two-thirds for President Obama by identifying a problem, telling people how I was going to deal with it, and then moving forward with the solution.”

Chris Schrimpf, a spokesman for the governor, said Sunday that Mr. Walker “looks forward to the Senate Democrats returning as soon as possible.”

Mr. Fitzgerald, the majority leader, said Sunday that the “budget repair” bill can’t be amended at this point. But it’s possible that over the next few weeks adjustments could be made to Mr. Walker’s broader budget plan, he said. “This bill will pass. The collective-bargaining piece has to pass. If it doesn’t the governor’s budget doesn’t work,” he said.

Mr. Miller declined to say how soon the Democratic senators, who left for Illinois on Feb. 17, would return. He said the group needed to address several issues first—including the resolution Senate Republicans passed last week that holds the Democrats in contempt and orders police to detain them when they return to Wisconsin.

Amid the public demonstrations and Democratic walk-out, the two sides have been negotiating. Mr. Fitzgerald said the governor is negotiating through two staff members with two Democrats, Sen. Bob Jauch and Sen. Tim Cullen. And last week, Mr. Fitzgerald met ago with Mr. Jauch and another Democrat in Kenosha.

Mr. Jauch said some people have suggested the lawmakers remain in Illinois for months while recall efforts of Republican senators proceed. He said that would be difficult for one senator who is seven months pregnant.

“I think we have to realize that there’s only so much we can do as a group to make a stand,” Mr. Jauch said. “It’s really up to the public to be engaged in carrying the torch on this issue.”

Brad Lutes, president of a local teachers union in Sun Prairie, Wis., said having Democrats return without getting bargaining curbs removed from the bill “would hurt,” but added, “I think they’ve done an awful lot being out as long as they have. It’s really given the people of Wisconsin an opportunity to see both sides of an issue.”

Mr. Walker’s bill would prohibit bargaining over health care and pensions for about 170,000 public employees in the state and would allow public employees to opt out of paying dues or belonging to a union.

The bill also would end the automatic collection of dues by the state, and require that every public-employee union get recertified to represent workers through an annual election.

Mr. Miller said the Democrats also want to fight Mr. Walker’s recently announced two-year budget plan, which cuts spending by $4.2 billion, or 6.7%, including $1.25 billion less in state aid to schools and local governments.

As the standoff in Wisconsin has dragged on, several polls showed majorities of Wisconsin voters disapproving of Mr. Walker’s plan as it affects public employees. At the same time, the governor maintains strong support among Republicans. He also has significant backing from voters for his plan to have union members pay more out of their salaries toward their pensions and health care. A poll released Friday by Rasmussen Reports, based on a phone survey conducted March 2 of 800 likely Wisconsin voters, found 52% of them opposed weakening collective-bargaining rights, while 39% were in favor.

When asked whether state workers should take a 10% pay cut—roughly the equivalent of the governor’s plan—44% supported the move and 38% were opposed.

A poll by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, which calls itself the state’s “free-market think tank,” showed that more voters, particularly independents, disapproved of the governor than in a similar survey by the institute in November. Republican voters’ support remained basically unchanged from the fall. The poll was based on phone interviews of 603 Wisconsin residents and conducted Feb. 27-March 1. Both polls had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The results of both polls were echoed in a recent poll by The Wall Street Journal / NBC News, which found that 62% of Americans oppose efforts to strip unionized government workers of their rights to collectively bargain, even as they want public employees to contribute more money to their retirement and health-care benefits. The poll was based on nationwide telephone interviews of 1,000 adults, conducted from Feb. 24-28, by the polling organizations of Peter D. Hart and Bill McInturff.

Mark Jefferson, head of the Wisconsin GOP, said polls reflected the big campaign unions have launched in the state. “The millions of dollars in national union money for advertising have been effective at getting the union message out,” he said.

He said even after Mr. Walker’s plan is passed, the state’s public workers will still have more collective-bargaining rights than most federal workers, who can bargain over working conditions but not pay and benefits.

Several big public-sector unions in Wisconsin have already said they would agree to fiscal concessions in Mr. Walker’s bill, including contributing 5.8% out of their pay to pensions and 12.6% out of their wages for health-care premiums, up from 6% on average today. But they object to ending bargaining rights and other changes.

Are you chasing search engine traffic and pondering your options? Almost anyone on the internet these days would love to increase traffic to thier website regardless of their “niche”.

Clearly search engines have the potential to deliver a steady flow of targeted traffic to your website. Listed below are several suggestions for efficient use of your money when it comes to getting traffic to your website.

Here are 3 basic areas to consider:

1. Placing some key targeted pages on the internet that are SEO’ed to draw traffic back to your primary website.

2. Using Google “pay per click” campaigns with your favorite suite of targeted keywords.

3. Placing carefully targeted content on your website homepage.

If you are working on a limited budget it may be best to consider Options #1 and #3 as your first choices. The pay per click traffic generators can get to be very expensive in a short time, and these will continue to cost you money while each campaign is active.

If your focus is on pay per click, be sure to spend adequate time and effort to research and generate a list of relevant and effective keywords. There are many tools for helping with this task available on the internet and once your campaign is launched you can start to monitor and test your conversions. If you are promoting your own product you can always reinvest your earnings to continue your campaign and grow your income.

Another option for drawing traffic to your website is based on the use of custom written articles and other targeted content. You can use your budget to have some unique articles written on your favorite key topics, but this can be very expensive and time consuming. Articles such as these can be submitted to article directories and published on other content hungry websites.

The best alternative for content may be that of Private Label website resources such Infogoround.com and webcontentmonthly.com. Using these Private Label content services, even on a limited budget, can over time easily provide thousands of articles that can be put to good work in drawing targeted traffic to your website. Imagine hundreds of new articles each month on a topic of your choice…articles that you can use just as if you had written them yourself! And of course PL content can be added directly to your own website or used in a variety of other ways for drawing traffic (blogs, newsletters, etc.).

This is just a glimpse of the power of content and other ways that can be used to draw traffic to your website. Be sure to explore your options and use your time and money wisely in the process.
