Maria asks…
From a business ethics point of view, what do you think of this type of advertising?
http://www.buy-links.com/lifes-short-get-a-divorce-billboard.jpg
Do you think that this type of advertising is ethical? This is a bilboard from a Chicago law firm who specialized in divorce cases, this bilboard was a part of the “Life’s short, get a divorce” campaign. What is your take on this? Do you think this is ethical?
admin answers:
Actually, I think its rather funny.
Yes, it’s ethical. I see the point that it is diminishing the status of marriage as a cultural institution by advertising it that way. Morally, however, it is impossible for me to take any marriage seriously that could be undone by such an advertisement.
Said another way, to whom is that ad aiming its appeal: (a) The person already divorced emotionally now shopping for the right attorney or (b) The person deeply in love with their spouse but still attracted to the opposite sex?
Clearly the answer is (a).
I might also pound the podium with the most conservative of religious fundamentalists (which I am most definitely not) and say that society gave up the right to treat marriage as sacred when it made no fault divorce the law of the land. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

“I pooted” and “Clowns hate tangelos”?? What are these billboards advertising????
I see them along the interstate in Birmingham, Alabama.
admin answers:
In Pittsburgh, I have seen 4: Clowns hate tangelos, I pooted, Look! I have a meat beard!, and Shiny Shiny, Pretty Pretty. I was mistified by these billboards so I did a little research. They appear to be references to Cartoon Network.

I am searching for downloadable pictures of children with cancer for a school project?
I am doing a class project where we have to produce 4 billboards advertising a non-profit organization. I choose children with cancer, and know I need pictures of kids in order to complete the project. The project theme is Help give children back their dreams. I want to show differant kids with cancer dreaming about differant fantasy things such as romance, adventure, magic, fantasy, things of that nature. So far though I am not having any luck finding pictures so if any one could help I’d appreciate it
admin answers:

Carol asks…
Are you bothered by the amount of advertising in society?
Advertising is everywhere – on tv, on radio, in movies, in subways, on the sides of buses, in public toilets, on billboards, on taxis, on blimps, on t-shirts, on posters, at music events, at sporting events, in mailboxes, in e-mails, on the web….. Do you ever get tired of people trying to sell you stuff?

Are shop owners in Scotland paid to have advertising on the front of their shops?
When I visit there I see “Kit Kat” and all kinds of other advertising along side the name of their shops; sometimes I can’t even see what the shop sells for all the ad signage the shops have.
I’m assuming the owners are paid so I’d like to know how much one store owner can earn, on average, in one year.
Seems like a good idea that should cross the Atlantic and save us here from all the huge erected signs and billboards that clog up our roadsides.
admin answers:
a good idea that you can’t even see what the store sells because there are so many signs blocking it, i don’t think so..they’ll loose more money that way..

Sharon asks…
Does anyone else want to rip the head off of that little Geico gecko?
I’m tired of seeing it and hearing it. Seems like I can’t go 5 minutes and he’s either on the TV, radio, or advertising billboard. How much money is Geico spending on ads? Obviously, they don’t need to make any more money off of me.
admin answers:
No he’s awesome, I just switched to Geico and saved a bunch on my car insurance.

how much does avertising on a billboard cost?
For an assignment, I am advertising a hotel in Alexandria MN, how much would it cost to advertise on a builboard per month and how much would it cost for an entire year
admin answers:
you would get better rates for the year but advertising on a billboard is all about location. the better the location the more effective and more expensive it is going to be. most billboards have the company who owns them telephone numberr on the bottom so i would call them and find out

Does anyone know what the FCC guidlines are for billboards?
Looking to find out the FCC guidlines are for billboard advertising (specifically in California if possible). What exactly can you get away with on a billboard? Are they privately owned? Need to know ASAP….writing a research paper.
Thanks for any help
admin answers:
The FCC is mostly concerned with broadcast media (radio, TV) and print media that crosses state lines.
In my experience billboards do not move across state lines, and can not be broadcast. They would be subject to the standards of the community in which they reside.
Most billboards are privately owned, by advedrtising companies who rent them to other businesses. Ever notice a small sign at the bottom of a billboard … “Ajax Outdoor Advertising” (or something similar)? That is the advertising company’s ad! They own the sign!
Why would a federal agency want to get involved in a local affair? It would be stupid, and somewhat less than economical! The feds have far better things to waste taxpayer’s dollars on!

Ken asks…
Looking for an SLR camera for Billboard advertisement.?
i would probably need an SLR with the highest mega pixels available and the best resolution. the pictures taken will be used in billboards to advertise machines, does anyone know about cameras ?
admin answers:
The advice to hire a photographer is the best bet. Be sure it is someone that has shot billboard material (the billboard company will know who) or you could still end up with someone that just thinks they know. There is much more to this than the camera.
Billboards are printed at very low resolutions to be viewed at a distance. If you shoot digital with 10 MP and a 1.5 crop factor sensor or larger it will do the job. A 35mm SLR with Ektar, Ektachrome or Kodachrome will do the job too -you just need a good scan of the original.
A pro will probably use equipment that exceeds the minimum specification, but not because it is a necessity. The other major factor in determining the equipment used will depend on what is required to get the machinery shots. Another reason why you should hire a pro.
A billboard photo is usually part of an advertising campaign. It will be shot to produce high resolution images for a multitude of display/viewing media. For that reason, medium or large format cameras would be the choice.
Also:
Some billboards are 12′ wide some are 48′, size matters. Some are printed at 4dpi some at 50dpi even up to 300dpi.
Some photos cover 100% of the billboard some 25%.

ADVERTISING…What would be a fun/easy/interesting product to design an advertising campaign for?
I have a photography project due soon which is to design a 5 image advertising campaign for ANY product or service of my choice for use in billboards, magazines etc. I’m having trouble even knowing what product or service to choose as it can be literally anything!! Any help is greatly appreciated!
admin answers:
The toughest assignments are the open-ended ones, like you have.
Choose something you’re interested in. Judging from a couple of your questions and answers, it sounds like you’re interested in fashion. If so, design an advertising campaign around a fashion item–either a dress, an accessory, or something similar.
Hope that helps.

What’s a commercial grade slogan for a Science Club that is going to be advertised on billboards in LA?
I am running a regional, public science program in Los Angeles and we are about to start a advertising campaign on billboards. In all seriousness, no nerdy puns please. I’m trying to come up with a good, two or three word slogan that an Angelino with a fifth grade education not only would understand but that would make learning about science seem desirable and sexy and relevant. I’ve thought about “think outside the equation” but it sounds too cliched. Any other ideas?
admin answers:
advertising on a billboard will probably cost you at least $1000 per month – especially anywhere near LA

Is my profession, outdoor advertising,(billboards) worth staying in after 12 years in it.?
admin answers:
Outdoor advertising is booming business.
The real question is what is the oportunity cost of leaving it based on your skill set. Are you walking away from a big severence package. Are you loosing medical coverage etc etc.
What are your prospects for replacing the income and the job satisfaction?

Billboard Easement legal? ?
My Condominium complex has an easement that allows a private company to keep an advertising billboard out front of our property. They’ve been advertising extreme gentlemen’s clubs just a few feet from our front door. When they update the sign, their workmen have a prime view into the homes of some of the residents. This easement was established by the builder before any of us lived here. Is this even legal, and how can we get rid of it?
According to the easement agreement the the grantee is required to supply my HOA with liability insurance, and for at least the last 3 years they have not done that. Wouldn’t that give us some legal standing? There’s also no documentation showing that the developer got 3/4 approval from the HOA board to initially establish the easement which is required by the CC&R’s.
Plus the easement details did not stipulate that the property would be used for a billboard.
admin answers:
You are not going to be able to get rid of the easement. It is too late for that. I am sure you knew about it before you bought the property.
You can try to buy them out, but it will take a lot of money. The company is making a lot of money on those billboards, they will not give that up.

Daniel asks…
When it comes to advertising or tv/radio programmes etc being controversial?
why do the minority have ‘control’? What I mean is that every time I see an article about an advert (be it billboard or tv) or a tv programme or some other such media being banned due to complaints, the number of complaints is incredibly low relative to the amount of people that must have seen/heard the offending media. It seems that it only takes a handful of modern day Mary Whitehouses to cause a tremendous fuss. Why is this? Whatever happened to majority rules?
admin answers:
There are laws and regulations relating to broadcast programmes. If a programme or advert breaks those rules only one person needs to complain for the complaint to be upheld.
However, I think I agree that there are problems. I think there are a couple of issues:
1. People who complain about a show they didn’t actually see or hear. They read about it two weeks later when the Daily Mail picks up on the story and then write in about.
Whilst, hopefully the complaints are only upheld by regulators if they are valid, the publicity the press generates is often counter productive. In order to avoid the negative PR broadcasters are becoming increasingly timid just in case they offend the Mail.
2. The obsession in the regulations about trivialities. The regulators have sat by and done s*d all on the misleading advertising of broadband Internet (adverts such as “up to 8Mbps” should be banned). However, at the same time they banned a deodorant commercial because the letter “t” in the caption looked like a crucifix. Apparently, this was judged to be offensive Christian viewers and was banned after someone complained.

I would stick to something that I know really well. For me, I really like the outdoors, surfing, I love food, maybe make up a restaurant and do all these fun ads for it. If you like make up you can do ads for different lip sticks, you can do a funny one advertising long lasting lipstick on a pitt bull (you know like sarah Palin] lol.

Looking for photo of a Three’s Company / Laverne & Shirley billboard by WGRZ-TV out of Buffalo, NY from 1982?
Back in 1982 WGRZ-TV 2 out of Buffalo had billboards up all throughout Buffalo advertising the shows Three’s Company & Laverne & Shirley. Looking for someone from the station, etc. that might have a photo of this particular billboard. I collect photos of vintage billboards and would like to have a photo of the billboard for my collection. Thanks.
