What’s a commercial grade slogan for a Science Club that is going to be advertised on billboards in LA?
I am running a regional, public science program in Los Angeles and we are about to start a advertising campaign on billboards. In all seriousness, no nerdy puns please. I’m trying to come up with a good, two or three word slogan that an Angelino with a fifth grade education not only would understand but that would make learning about science seem desirable and sexy and relevant. I’ve thought about “think outside the equation” but it sounds too cliched. Any other ideas?

advertising on a billboard will probably cost you at least $1000 per month – especially anywhere near LA

Is my profession, outdoor advertising,(billboards) worth staying in after 12 years in it.?
admin answers:
Outdoor advertising is booming business.
The real question is what is the oportunity cost of leaving it based on your skill set. Are you walking away from a big severence package. Are you loosing medical coverage etc etc.
What are your prospects for replacing the income and the job satisfaction?

Billboard Easement legal? ?
My Condominium complex has an easement that allows a private company to keep an advertising billboard out front of our property. They’ve been advertising extreme gentlemen’s clubs just a few feet from our front door. When they update the sign, their workmen have a prime view into the homes of some of the residents. This easement was established by the builder before any of us lived here. Is this even legal, and how can we get rid of it?
According to the easement agreement the the grantee is required to supply my HOA with liability insurance, and for at least the last 3 years they have not done that. Wouldn’t that give us some legal standing? There’s also no documentation showing that the developer got 3/4 approval from the HOA board to initially establish the easement which is required by the CC&R’s.
Plus the easement details did not stipulate that the property would be used for a billboard.
admin answers:
You are not going to be able to get rid of the easement. It is too late for that. I am sure you knew about it before you bought the property.
You can try to buy them out, but it will take a lot of money. The company is making a lot of money on those billboards, they will not give that up.

Daniel asks…
When it comes to advertising or tv/radio programmes etc being controversial?
why do the minority have ‘control’? What I mean is that every time I see an article about an advert (be it billboard or tv) or a tv programme or some other such media being banned due to complaints, the number of complaints is incredibly low relative to the amount of people that must have seen/heard the offending media. It seems that it only takes a handful of modern day Mary Whitehouses to cause a tremendous fuss. Why is this? Whatever happened to majority rules?
admin answers:
There are laws and regulations relating to broadcast programmes. If a programme or advert breaks those rules only one person needs to complain for the complaint to be upheld.
However, I think I agree that there are problems. I think there are a couple of issues:
1. People who complain about a show they didn’t actually see or hear. They read about it two weeks later when the Daily Mail picks up on the story and then write in about.
Whilst, hopefully the complaints are only upheld by regulators if they are valid, the publicity the press generates is often counter productive. In order to avoid the negative PR broadcasters are becoming increasingly timid just in case they offend the Mail.
2. The obsession in the regulations about trivialities. The regulators have sat by and done s*d all on the misleading advertising of broadband Internet (adverts such as “up to 8Mbps” should be banned). However, at the same time they banned a deodorant commercial because the letter “t” in the caption looked like a crucifix. Apparently, this was judged to be offensive Christian viewers and was banned after someone complained.

What things do you like and are familar with?
I would stick to something that I know really well. For me, I really like the outdoors, surfing, I love food, maybe make up a restaurant and do all these fun ads for it. If you like make up you can do ads for different lip sticks, you can do a funny one advertising long lasting lipstick on a pitt bull (you know like sarah Palin] lol.

Looking for photo of a Three’s Company / Laverne & Shirley billboard by WGRZ-TV out of Buffalo, NY from 1982?
Back in 1982 WGRZ-TV 2 out of Buffalo had billboards up all throughout Buffalo advertising the shows Three’s Company & Laverne & Shirley. Looking for someone from the station, etc. that might have a photo of this particular billboard. I collect photos of vintage billboards and would like to have a photo of the billboard for my collection. Thanks.

What can we do to make our billboard stand out? We are a hospital?
I have started a new advertising firm and want to set our customers billbaords off from the rest. any good ideas would be appreciated.
admin answers:
It depends on what you are trying to communicate. Is it a branding message for the entire hospital, is it to promote a specific specialty, or the quality of the doctors, etc. Who is the target? In general billboard messaging should be mostly visual with some short text. I would try to appeal to your target’s emotions.

What is the typical markup on Out-Of-Home Advertising?
I have an opportunity to sell a client outdoor media (billboards, Transit ads, etc.). The provider will give me agency pricing, but what is the typical markup on this form of advertising? I know there are only a hand full of companies offering this form of advertising, but a lot of resellers. Thanks
admin answers:
Within an ad agency all media placements are marked up 15% of the net that the vendor is charging the agency. The client is billed a gross amount, meaning that will include the mark up. For example- if a billboard cost $5,000 net per month to the agency, we will in turn charge the client $5,882.35 gross per month ($5,000 net divided by .85 = $5,882.35 gross). On the production side of things, meaning the cost to produce the vinyl that will be going on to the billboard the agency will mark that cost up by 20% of the net cost to bill the client gross. For example- If you have one 14 x 48 billboard that will cost $2,000 to the agency to produce the vinyl that goes onto the space then we will charge the client $2,500 per vinyl ( $2,000 net divided by .80 = $2,500 gross). If you want a really good OOH company to work with try Matrix Media, they handle many different kinds of OOH all over the country for placement and production. They are great to work with and make things easy especially if you are placing OOH in many markets and will provide you with agency pricing. Many agencies use them as a vendor. Good Luck!

Maria asks…
how much do people pay for billboard rentals in Oregon?
if you have a billboard for your business near the oregon coast……how much are you paying to have your business advertised?
admin answers:
I don’t know off the top of my head, but I’m curious too. I know it’s based on the size and the location of the sign, and that about 100 new signs have been added on the coast in various locations in the past couple of years (article recently in the Eugene Register Guard as I recall). The only one I that come to mind are the Mill Casino ones from Reedsport and south to near Bandon.
Update: I wasn’t able to find the actual costs, but there are two companies that have the billboards – Century and Meadowoutdoor. Most of the signs are for the casinos. But one was for the city of Gold Beach. You might call and ask if there is a difference in price for non-profits (like a chamber of commerce) and try both companies to see if their pricing is different.

Where can i buy a Forgiven Energy Drink?
I saw a billboard advertising this energy drink today. Where can i buy some? I live in Rancho Cucamonga CA.
admin answers:
Had the same issue myself, we filled out the “join out mailing list” at www.forgivenenergy.com and the sales person called me back 2 days later. Pretty cool people, they set me some sample cans for free and then I ordered a case from them directly. Probably the best energy drink I have tasted so far and the reasoning behind it is pretty cool as well. Hope this helps ~Sam

How can I get big name companies to advertise on the website?
Increasing traffic is not a problem. I just need to know how I can get in touch with these types of companies.
Are there companies or advertising agencies that work on commission to help people like me?
admin answers:
You have to have significant traffic to attract the big time advertising networks. If you have pages that talk endless and specifically about shoes, then adsense advertisements selected by Google would be shoe related but you can’t control the brand that appears (Nike?)
Here’s one relatively small time banner ad brokerage that should pay OK, there rates chart should give you an idea of the sort of traffic they expect. buysellads.com/buy

Thomas asks…
As a newspaper advertising rep, who can I market my medium to national ad agencies/ media buyers?
I know that large, national ad agencies/ media buyers would be interested in purchasing ads (for their clients) in the newspaper I work for. I am new to the business, but I know that my newspaper has indeed relied on national ad agencies/ media buyers for much of its ad revenue in the past (and still does). Is it okay for me, as an ad rep, to contact ad agencies directly to try to convince them to spend more of their client’s ad dollars with my particular media?
admin answers:
You should talk with your manager, every company is set up differently and a lot of the times, companies have national account reps that have the right contacts and skills to go after different agencies. If you are allowed I suggest networking and trying to get a face to face meeting to give them information to get back to you.

Helen asks…
Are advertising agencies ethical?
I have a small business in need of advertising. I have been told advertising agencies are the best way to go but I have also heard they watch out for their profit more than mine. Another businessman says he hired an agency and they only placed advertising for him with media that paid a commission. For instance, there are two phone directories in our area, and the agency placed yellow pages ads in the one that paid the agency a commission and then totally left him out of the other directory. He felt he should have an ad in both directories since both are fairly popular. They told him he didn’t need ads in both, that just one would do. Now I’m not an advertising whiz, but even I can see that’s BS. When he confronted the agency rep, he was told the agency knew all about advertising and he should just let them make all the decisions. Is this a nice little scam? Agencies apparently make money from both the client and the media, so it would seem like it would be more profitable for the agency to use only commission paying media, even if it meant ignoring a good media source.
admin answers:
Welcome to the Real World of Business
Yes, they are ‘looking out for number one’ .. if he doesn’t like the ‘service’, he should vote with his feet ..
PS you are doing the right thing by asking others what they think of their Agencies (if people did more research before parting with their money, there would be a lot fewer cowboy operators ..)

What’s up with Coke billboard?
I keep seeing these billboards advertising a 2-pack of 50-oz bottles of Coke, and it says “100 oz of Coke — Enough For Your Meal”. What does that mean? 100 oz is like 3/4 of a gallon! Does it mean that it’s enough to BE a meal by itself? Or it’s enough for my whole family’s meal? And why is it in 2 bottles? I don’t get it. Who would drink 3/4 of a gallon of Coke with one meal?
admin answers:
Disabuse yourself of the notion that Coke or any other “food” purveyor has the best interest of anyone except a major stockholder at heart.
They would advertise it as “Part of a nutritious breakfast” if they thought it would fly.

What do you call those tall advertising towers/poles used by fastfood restaurants and the like?
Like the one Mcdonald’s uses.. the one with a really high flag pole kinda tower with a big M sign? Or the ones you see in retail strips and malls with a steel tower looking frame with signboards/signages of establishments? Sorta like a slim billboard tower. What’s the more correct term for structures like those I mentioned? Thanks!
admin answers:
I think you a talking about different variations of structurally secure pylon signs.

Paul asks…
How much does it cost to make a billboard? And how much does it cost to advertise for 6 months or so?
I just need some rough estimates..and I know it depends on what location, and the city, and other stuff..but I just need a rough estimate..

admin answers:
I live in the Midwest and just left a marketing job where we used outdoor. You have two sizes of boards — posters and bulletins. Posters are the smaller size boards you see and bulletins are the large ones. The smaller boards ran around $600 a month for rental. The large ones ran around $1,500 to $2,000 a month. You might also look into doing a six-month poster showing. This means you might have several posters that rotate to various locations over the six-month period. Often, outdoor companies run special rates on poster showings, so be sure to ask.
You might check out this web site.
http://www.lamaroutdoor.com/index.html
They have a rate calculator. You can put in where you live, and they give you the various sizes of boards and the rental rates.
In addition to the monthly rate, you must also pay in the beginning for the panels that go on the boards. I can’t recall the exact cost of the posters for the smaller boards, as someone else handled this. The cost for the vinyls for the large boards was around $1,000 each. The outdoor company can design it for you, and I would highly recommend that. Outdoor design is tough. What you think will show up very well may not once on the board. I learned, the hard way, that the graphic designers at the outdoor company are skilled at knowing what will work.
One last thought. Something I had considered in the past, instead of billboards, was to do an auto wrap. If your business has a decent van or auto, you can purchase a wrap for around $6,000. It would be traveling all around, and over the course of a year, would be less than six months of renting a large billboard. Just a thought.

Robert asks…
Girls- Would you be interested in having your feet displayed on a billboard?
I’m an intern for a radio station and we’re looking for a girl with the right feet to have them displayed on a billboard advertising our morning show. (that’s why I’ve asked so many feet questions. lol)
Post a link to a pic of your feet on here (on photobucket or picasa only)……have both feet in the pic, elevated off the floor and crossed at the ankles. (up close with no parts of your feet cut out of the photo) I’ll contact you if we want you in our top 25.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a pedi right now. We’re only looking for the right shaped feet.
Also if interested take another one of the bottoms of both bare feet crossed at the ankles close up and face showing in the background.
admin answers:
